Keto Simple Syrup: Our Easy Tutorial

As many others on Keto have probably noticed, cocktails usually contain some amount of sugar or syrup that makes them a no go. This normally leaves us in a position to either forgo the drink altogether or make huge substitutions which…let’s be honest, ruin the drink.

So, if you’re like me and like to enjoy the occasional cocktail but don’t want to risk getting out of ketosis or drinking a cheap imitation, here is our keto simple syrup recipe. This is absolutely perfect for a number of classic cocktails like the old fashioned or whiskey sour.

Ingredients

  • 2 parts low carb sweetener (we prefer allulose)
  • 1 part water

How to make keto simple syrup for cocktails?

All you need to do to make this recipe is heat a saucepan at medium-high and add your ingredients. Stir constantly until you have a nice, syrupy consistency that leaves a trace when spread on the back of a spoon.

Be careful not to let the syrup burn by taking it off the heat once large bubbles start to form. You can then store the syrup in a container of your choice.

Once the syrup has cooled, the recipe is done and you can now add a completely keto-friendly syrup to make your cocktails taste just as good as the original.

Can you make demerara syrup keto?

Most artificial sweeteners that are safe for keto are based on simple white sugar and so retain a very similar flavor profile. A demerara syrup is made from brown cane sugar and has a deeper, richer flavor that can offer more to dark cocktails.

Finding a keto brown sugar substitute is a bit more difficult but there are some brands available that use ingredients like Erythritol and Stevia to make them work. If you can get your hands on this kind of product, then it’s really easy to make a keto demerara syrup using the same ratios: 2 parts sweetener, one part water.

What is the best keto sweetener for making simple syrup?

Remember when making keto simple syrup, it’s not just meant to be sweet, it needs to have a more natural, sugar-like taste to seamlessly compliment the cocktail. That makes sweeteners like Stevia a poor choice because it tends to have a bitter aftertaste.

Instead, opt for sweeteners like Allulose or Erythritol as these have a more natural sweet taste. In the case of Erythritol, you may need to adjust the recipe and include a little bit more sweetener as it doesn’t quite have the same amount of sweetness as sugar.

Storing your keto simple syrup

To store, keep your syrup in a sealed container like a glass bottle. At room temperature you can store it for up to 2 months. Alternatively, you can refrigerate or freeze the syrup too which will allow you to store it for up to 6 months.
